In brief: Dog owners event will be Saturday
The Spokane Kennel Club is sponsoring a Responsible Dog Owner Day event Saturday at Clark Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Activities include training and breeding clinics, talent and costume contests, dog sports, and kids’ safety. The Lilac City Dog Trainers and the Spokane Dog Trainers will be giving demonstrations.
Clark Park is located at Division and Garland in Spokane.
East Central
Spaghetti feed will aid center
East Central presents its fourth annual spaghetti feed fundraiser on Sept. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the East Central Community Center.
Admission is $8 for adults and $4 for children. The dinner will feature spaghetti with homemade meat sauce, green salad, garlic bread, spumoni ice cream and a beverage.
Proceeds will benefit the East Central Senior Center’s low-cost senior activities.

ROCKFORD
Fair handbooks available
Exhibitor handbooks for the Southeast Spokane County Fair in Rockford are available at Farmers and Merchants Bank locations throughout the region. The fair will be takes place the weekend of Sept. 21.
Fair organizers also are asking for photos and essays about harvest days gone by in southeast Spokane County. The theme of this year’s fair is Harvest Memories.

Spokane Valley
Valley Chapel rezone sought
The Spokane County hearing examiner has scheduled a public hearing for Sept. 12 on a zone change request for 120 acres at the southeast corner of Valley Chapel and Stoughton roads.
The request calls for changing the zoning from large-tract to small-tract agriculture, which would allow for subdivision into 10-acre lots. County assessor records show the owner is Craftsman Homes Northwest Inc. of Spokane Valley.
The hearing is set for 9 a.m. in the Commissioners’ Assembly Room in the lower level of the Spokane County Public Works Building.

Florist will give flowers away
Appleway Florist & Greenhouse will be giving away 2,000 free flowers Wednesday for FTD Good Neighbor Day.
The store, 11006 E. Sprague Ave., will give away a dozen flowers to anyone who promises to give away 11 of the flowers.
The goal is to spread good will and friendship in the community. Appleway also is collecting nonperishable food donations for the Second Harvest Food Bank.
North Spokane
Golf event to aid Guilds’ School
The 16th Annual Wendy’s Classic Golf Tournament will be held Sept. 17 at the Spokane Country Club, 2010 W. Waikiki Road.
The annual event, hosted by Wendy’s Restaurants, benefits the Spokane Guilds’ School & Neuromuscular Center.
The tournament will be a two-person best ball which will begin as a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
The cost is $250 per player and includes 18 holes of golf, lunch, dinner and prizes. There will also be an auction including a two-person slot in the Lexus Champions for Charity tournament held in Pebble Beach, Calif.
Last year, the tournament raised over $43,000 for the school. Over 100 golfers and 30 sponsors participated in the event.
The Spokane Guilds’ School helps children from birth through age three with developmental disabilities.

SCC auto student wins scholarship
Katy House has received a $1,500 scholarship from the Car Care Council women’s board.
House attends Spokane Community College, where she is working toward an associate’s degree in automotive technology. She plans to graduate next year and become an Automotive Service Excellence master certified technician in 2009.
The Car Care Council women’s board helps inform women about proper vehicle maintenance and safety.
East Central
Block party to aid cancer patient
The Wishing Star Foundation and DeVries Business Services are holding a block party and shredding event Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to benefit a young boy, Gabe.
Gabe has a stage IV Wilms tumor and metastasis tumors on both lungs. He has been in remission for two years but still needs CAT scans every three months, since this kind of cancer has an 80 percent chance of recurrence.
Gabe’s wish is a bedroom makeover with a Spongebob Squarpants theme.
To help raise money for the bedroom, there will be a block party on Pacific Avenue which will be closed from Sherman to Sheridan.
The day will include coffee from Starbucks, music by Cat Country, an auction and raffle tickets available for $2.
There will also be haircuts by Great Clips for a $5 minimum donation.
Participants can also bring three boxes of documents that can be shredded for a donation.
