In brief: Man dies in fall from pickup

From Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

A Spokane Valley man died Sunday after falling from a pickup bed and hitting his head on the parking lot. Police identified Daniel R Taylor, 22, as the victim.

The accident occurred after a wedding reception at CenterPlace in Spokane Valley’s Mirabeau Park. Police were called to CenterPlace, 2421 N. Discovery Place, about 9:30 p.m. Saturday for what was originally reported as a two-car accident in which Taylor fell.

But police learned there was no collision. The victim and a friend were at the wedding reception. Both were reportedly drinking alcohol at the reception and in the parking lot.

As people were leaving, Taylor apparently climbed into the bed of his friend’s 2006 Dodge Ram. The driver, who police are not identifying, accelerated, and the victim fell to the asphalt, striking his head.

The driver moved the truck to another part of the parking lot before officers arrived. Later, he and a female acquaintance hid the pickup at an apartment complex where the driver’s grandmother lives. Witnesses identified the driver and the passenger to police. Both were asleep at the woman’s residence when police found them. Officers seized the pickup and had it towed to the sheriff’s impound lot as evidence. No arrests were made, but an investigation continues and criminal charges are possible.
