Yankees 4, Red Sox 3: At Boston, Roger Clemens shut down his original team, allowing only two hits in six innings and outpitching Josh Beckett in leading New York to a victory over the Red Sox. Alex Rodriguez hit his 44th home run.

Royals 5, Tigers 0: At Kansas City, Mo., Esteban German hit a go-ahead triple in a five-run first inning against Andrew Miller and the Royals beat Detroit in only the second shutout of the Tigers this year. Detroit fell 4 1/2 games behind division-leading Cleveland.

Devil Rays 5, Orioles 4 (12): At Baltimore, Dioner Navarro singled in the tiebreaking run in the 12th inning and Tampa Bay took advantage of another meltdown by the Orioles’ bullpen in handing Baltimore its eighth straight loss. Baltimore led 4-1 in the eighth inning before Tampa Bay rallied a second straight night to win.

Athletics 5, Blue Jays 4 (11): At Oakland, Calif., Jack Hannahan hit a game-ending single with two outs in the 11th inning off Scott Downs to help the Athletics snap a five-game losing streak with a victory over Toronto. The Blue Jays’ Roy Halladay allowed four runs, seven hits and a career-high tying six walks in nine innings.

Indians 4, Twins 3: At Cleveland, rookie Asdrubal Cabrera’s two-run home run off Johan Santana and Victor Martinez’s solo shot in a four-run first backed C.C. Sabathia in his long-delayed 15th win as the first-place Indians beat Minnesota.

Rangers 5, White Sox 4 (11): At Arlington, Texas, Sammy Sosa hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Rangers a victory over Chicago. Sosa hit a fly ball to center and Jerry Owens made a diving catch, but the fielder had no chance to get up and throw Ian Kinsler out at the plate.
