Elway shows son the right way

With No. 7 emblazoned across his chest, the high school senior preparing for the season opener Friday night drops back and throws a dart to a receiver in the back of the end zone.

Wow, this kid really is the next Elway.

Jack Elway is the 17-year-old son of Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, who is tutoring his kid this season as Cherry Creek High School’s (Englewood, Colo.) quarterbacks coach.

Jack, who won the starting job as a junior, is considering somebig-time college programs.

“I liked Stanford,” Jack said. “My sister goes there, so I’ve been there a bit. But I’d say Oregon, Arizona State, LSU and UCLA.”

Pac-10 refs get low marks

It’s not only around Oklahoma, where Sooners faithful feel they got chiseled out of a win at Oregon last year, that they take a dim view of Pac-10 officiating. Division I-A football coaches, asked in the third annual Seattle Times survey which conference had the most incompetent officiating, named the Pac-10 more than any other.

Forty-two coaches were polled. The Pac-10 received nine votes. The Big Ten received the most votes (7) for the most competent officials.

Beckham’s season may be over

David Beckham could miss the rest of the Los Angeles Galaxy’s season after being diagnosed with a sprained right knee Thursday.

The English midfielder underwent an MRI exam that confirmed he sprained the medial collateral ligament..

Beckham was injured in a tackle with Pachuca midfielder Fernando Salazar in the first half of Wednesday’s SuperLiga title match. He was expected to be out about six weeks, and will immediately begin rehabilitation. That would place his return at mid-October, at which point the Galaxy would have three regular-season games left.
