Handle on business: Calypso’s Coffee opens

Nils Rosdahl Correspondent

Taking advantage of their large spaces, the new Calypso’s Coffee Co. in downtown Coeur d’Alene offers a variety of seating areas, a conference room, a kids’ play area and even study-computer desks.

The store opened Monday in the former Erlendson Art Glass building at 116 E. Lakeside Ave. It offers many beverage options from in-house roasted coffees and espressos to blended fruit drinks. Foods include breakfast and lunch sandwiches, soups, salads, pastries and decadent desserts.

The conference room has table seating for up to 24 people, and the large kids’ area has many toy and book options. Live music will be featured on weekends, and open-mike nights will be added during the week.

Owners Michell Remley and David Ivy came to Coeur d’Alene from Harrison and Hammond, La., respectively. They plan to add to their 12 employees as the business grows. Opening daily at 7 a.m., the store closes at 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, midnight Fridays and Saturdays and at 8 p.m. Sundays. Phone 665-0591.

Pet Resort opens in Coeur d’Alene

Offering overnight and daytime animal care, the Coeur d’Alene Pet Resort and Doggie Day care is now open at 125 E. Hazel Ave. The 10,000-square-foot facility formerly was the Coeur d’Alene Animal Shelter and before that a beverage distribution warehouse.

The business offers enclosures and theme-decorated “suites” for dogs and cats as well as exercise and play activities. Other options include items from Auntie Kathy’s Paws on Wheels boutique and Doggie BonBons. A fountain will be added in the summer.

Owners are Dave and Dawn Kelp and Albert and Kim Bojorquez. Both couples came to Coeur d’Alene from Spokane. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Phone 667-4606 or check www.cdapetresort.com.

Bent Rebar moves into old Subaru building

Specializing in the bending and cutting of rebar for all types of construction, Bent Rebar has moved into the former Coeur d’Alene Subaru building at 1704 N. Fourth St. Capable of fabricating 100 tons of rebar a day, the company leased 10,000 square feet inside the building and nearly 17,000 square feet outside.

With 27 years’ experience in the business, owner Chris Uecke employs 14 people in two shifts. The company has filled orders for more than 660 tons of rebar and supplied various projects, including Coeur d’Alene’s new federal courthouse, Riverview Towers and the Towers at Ridge Pointe, Panhandle State Bank in Sandpoint, the Kalispell Wastewater Treatment Plant, the grandstand at the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds and Spokane’s Shadle Park High School.

Business hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. The office is at 410 E. Annie Ave. Phone 765-1606. The Web site, www.bentrebar.com, is under construction.

This week’s tidbits

“The filming of “Good Morning America” Wednesday has brought accolades to Coeur d’Alene from around the country. The show “discovered” Coeur d’Alene’s holiday splash through Jerry Jaeger, president and co-owner of the Hagadone Hospitality Group, with help from Steve Herling of KXLY-TV.

“Not every business can get a special highway department directional sign placed beside the interstate as Cabela’s has at the Pleasant View exit. The reasoning is to get travelers to take that exit rather than the one on the Washington side as the ancient Spokane River bridge there isn’t suited for continuous heavy traffic.

“The former Coeur d’Aene Lube Center at 1830 N. Third St. has a sign announcing it will become an Oil Can Henry’s. Don’t let your car dry up waiting. The Portland chain won’t be here until next summer.
