Eastern outlasts UMKC

From News Services The Spokesman-Review

Contributing on both ends of the floor, senior Marcus Hinton scored a team-high 16 points to lead Eastern Washington to a 65-54 non-conference men’s basketball win at Missouri-Kansas City Monday night.

Senior Kellen Williams had 15 and sophomore Gary Gibson 14 for EWU (3-6).

“We’re very proud,” said Eagles coach Kirk Earlywine. “We played eight guys tonight and five of them had never played in a Division I game a month ago.

” I’m not going to say it was pretty down the stretch in how we did it, but we were tough enough to hold onto the ball and make our free throws.”

Reggie Hamilton had a career-high 19 points for the Kangaroos (3-5), who lost for the first time at home in four games.

“We did a good job of guarding,” said Earlywine. “They were a team that was attempting 20 3s per game … so we had to push out farther than what we are comfortable doing.”

WSU down, GU up

Washington State, despite improving its record to 7-0, slipped to eighth from a best-ever sixth in the Associated Press poll.

Gonzaga (7-1) rose to No. 17 from 19th.
