Collecting: Disney figurines

Larry Cox King Features Syndicate

Q: I have three small figurines of Bambi, Flower and Thumper that were issued when the Disney film was released. The pieces are old but unmarked by wear. I would like to know their value. — E.M.H., Bradenton, Fla.

A: I consulted the Official Price Guide to Disney Collectibles by Ted Hake (House of Collectibles, $29.95), which references more than 28,000 values of Disney collectibles. I think I found your three figurines. The values listed by Hake are: Bambi, $15-$50 range; Flower, $10-$40 range; and Thumper, $30-$100. Although there were dozens of figurines made, these three by Shawe and American Pottery are the earliest and were issued in 1946.

Q: I have come into possession of a collection of Jonah Hex comic books and would like to know their value. — Shirley, Belle Glade, Fla.

A: The Jonah Hex comic books were introduced in 1977. The very first one, Vengeance for a Fallen Gladiator, often sells in the $100 to $175 range, depending on condition. To find out the value of your comics, I suggest you contact an established dealer. One of the better guides that might be helpful for you is the Comic Book Checklist & Price Guide: 1961-Present, edited by Maggie Thompson and others (Krause Publications, $19.99). It has current prices for more than 125,000 comics.
