Ed notebook: Madison honored as blue-ribbon school

Madison Elementary School celebrated its No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Status Monday with an assembly and performance by the sixth-grade choir.

Mayor Mary Verner, U.S. Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Cynthia Williams from the Department of Education, Garret Daggett, president of the Spokane Public School Board and Superintendent Nancy Stowell attended the event at the school, 319 W. Nebraska Ave.

The No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon status is given to public and private K-12 schools that are academically superior in their states or have demonstrated dramatic gains in student achievement.

Principal of the Year

Principal Matt Handelman of Moran Prairie Elementary School has been awarded the Dick Stannard Distinguished Elementary Principal of the Year award.

Handelman has been teaching since 1988 and joined Spokane Public Schools in 2001.

The award is named after Stannard, a much-loved principal in Spokane Public Schools, who died in 1996.

Spokane Public School board changes

Garret Daggett has been named the new president of the board of directors at Spokane Public Schools.

During the Nov. 28 board meeting, Rocky Treppiedi became the board’s vice president who serves as the legislative liaison. Bob Douthitt is a new board member, and Christie Querna and Sue Chapin were sworn in as re-elected directors.

LC celebrates state championship

The students of Lewis and Clark High School celebrated their state champion football team in an assembly Dec. 7.

Coach Tom Yearout and senior team members spoke to the students, and there was a highlight video of the game shown to the crowd.

Yearout was also selected as the Seattle Seahawks High School Coach of the Year. The award brings the football program a $2,000 grant.

Tuition scholarship fund established

St. Patrick Catholic School, 2706 E. Queen Ave., has received $100,000 from an anonymous donor to establish a student scholarship fund.

The fund will be known as the Father Daniel J. Barnett Scholarship Fund, named for the school’s former pastor.

The fund is now receiving donations.
