GU’s Bowman breaks hand

Heather Bowman, who leads Gonzaga in scoring (21.2 ppg) and rebounding (10.1 rpg), could miss up to six weeks after breaking her left hand in practice this week.

A decision will be made next week to determine if the sophomore from Lewis and Clark needs surgery to insert a pin in her hand.

“It’s one of those things,” GU coach Kelly Graves said. “Everybody’s got to pick it up just a little bit more, mainly our other inside kids.”

The Bulldogs (6-3) play at No. 1 Tennessee (8-0) on Sunday and face Purdue at The Kennel Wednesday. They have three more non-league games before conference plays starts Jan. 10.

Cougars keep Levenseller

Washington State assistant Mike Levenseller will remain on the football staff at WSU, leaving just two spots left to fill under new coach Paul Wulff.

Earlier this week Wulff announced the additions of former Eastern Washington assistant coaches Todd Sturdy, Jody Sears, Travis Niekamp, Malik Roberson and Rich Rasmussen, while retaining current Cougar coach Steve Broussard.

Levenseller has been on the Cougar staff since the beginning of the 1992 season, when he began working with WSU’s wide receivers. The past seven years he added offensive coordinator duties while still working day-to-day as the wide receivers position coach.

NAIA juggernauts in title game

The two powerhouse NAIA schools of the decade will finally meet in the association’s marquee game. The Sioux Falls Cougars face the Carroll College Fighting Saints in the national championship today, seeking the title that has been held by no other schools since 2001.

The programs have accounted for the last five national championships, but this will be the first time they meet in the title game.

Sioux Falls (13-0) is looking to repeat as national champion against Carroll (14-0), which returns after winning four consecutive championships from 2002 to 2005.

Scotty Rice, a backup linebacker from Colville High School, is on the Carroll roster. He was inadvertently left off the list of area players in a story that ran in Thursday’s sports section.
