In brief: Arc wants to honor advocates
The Arc of Spokane is looking for people or organizations that deserve to be recognized for their support of people with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
They will be honored at the Arc’s annual meeting on March 18. Nominees need not have an affiliation with the Arc to be considered. Categories include: the Hazel Skog Award, the Good Neighbor Award, Advocate of the Year, Self-Advocate of the Year, Educator of the Year, Employer of the Year, Media Person of the Year and Organization of the Year.

Center offers free baseball clinic
A free baseball clinic for kids ages 7 to 10 will be held next Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the East Central Community Center to teach fundamentals of hitting, throwing, and fielding.
Used youth-size baseball gloves are for kids who cannot afford a new mitt.

SPOKANE VALLEY
Register kids now for theater class
Christian Youth Theater is accepting registration for theater arts classes that begin the week of Jan. 7 in Spokane Valley. Classes are for youth ages 6 to 18 and run 10 weeks.
The session will end with a showcase to show friends and family what the children have learned. Classes include accents and dialect, stage fighting, hip-hop, core acting, singing and dancing, Salute to Disney and many more.
All students enrolled in a class are eligible to audition for “A Little Mermaid,” which runs Feb. 22 through March 1 at the Bing Crosby Theater.

SPOKANE COUNTY
SCRAPS open through Saturday
The Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service will be closed Monday as a result of President Bush’s executive order regarding government office closures on Christmas Eve.
Cindy Taskila, SCRAPS shelter officer, said many “lovely, happy adolescent and adult dogs and cats” are available through Saturday.
“We send our very young puppies and kittens to Spokane Humane Society, as they can offer a quiet and warm environment for young animals,” says Nancy Hill, SCRAPS director.
SCRAPS, 2521 N. Flora Road, is open for adoptions from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today and Friday, noon to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 477-2532.
