Area Roundup: Larkins signs with Vandals

Virdell Larkins, a junior college transfer out of Laney JC in Oakland, Calif., has signed a letter of intent to join the University of Idaho football team next fall.

A highly touted safety, Larkins initially signed with California before transferring to Laney for the 2006 and 2007 seasons.

Larkins, 6-foot, 195 pounds, was a three-time Oakland Athletic League selection at Oakland Tech High School, where he had 17 interceptions and 29 sacks and 1,200 yards as a wide receiver.

Larkins is head coach Robb Akey’s first recruit of the 2008 class.

Mike Anderson, a linebacker for the Vandals from 2002-05, was also added as a defensive graduate assistant after two years at Washington State.

“Defensive back Nygel Rogers has re-signed with the Spokane Shock for the arenafootball2 season. Rogers is the eighth member of the 2007 West Division Champions to re-sign with the team.

In his rookie season last year, Rogers finished with eight interceptions and 69 total tackles.

Men’s basketball

Community Colleges of Spokane was unanimously ranked No. 1 in the newest NWAACC rankings. The Sasquatch received all eight first-place votes after beating Peninsula by 30 points on Tuesday.

CCS is back in action Saturday when it takes on Highline Community College at Spokane Community College. Game time is set for 4 p.m.

Track and field

The Idaho men have been ranked 20th in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason poll.

The team will start the indoor season at the WSU Indoor Open on Jan. 18-19.
