Gonzaga women topple Montana State

Janelle Bekkering led five players in double figures with 16 points and also collected a game-high 11 rebounds to lead the Gonzaga women’s basketball team past Montana State 82-68 in a non-conference game Friday at Worthington Arena in Bozeman.

Vivian Frieson and Courtney Vandersloot had 14 points apiece, Tiffanie Shives chipped in 13 and Claire Raap added 10 for the Bulldogs, who held a 34-25 advantage at halftime.

GU held a 39-35 advantage in rebounds.

Krislyn Wallace had a game-high 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting to guide the Bobcats.

The Bulldogs improved to 7-5 while MSU fell to 5-5.

•Ally Wade scored a game-high 24 points to lead Long Beach State to a 61-55 non-conference win over Washington State at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif.

Colleen Betteridge had 16 points to lead the Cougars, who made 2 of 3 free-throw attempts.

WSU fell to 3-8 on the season and the 49ers improved to 2-8.

•Amy VanHollebeke led four players in double figures with 19 points and Pacific defeated Eastern Washington in a non-conference game at Alex G. Spanos Center in Stockton, Calif.

Kelsey Lavender had 16 points, Janae Young chipped in 15 and Karen Dawkins added 11 for the Tigers, who led 36-21 at the half.

Tatjana Sparavalo tossed in a game-high 23 points to lead the Eagles. Sydney Benson added 15 points and nine rebounds and Kyla Evans chipped in 13 points for EWU.

The Eagles fell to 3-9 overall while Pacific improved to 4-7.

•Katelan Redmon (Lewis and Clark High) hit a 12-footer with 3 seconds left to give Washington a 66-65 come-from-behind victory over Purdue in a non-conference game at Bank of America Arena in Seattle.

Purdue’s Kalika France missed two free throws with 14.8 seconds left. Andrea Plouffe rebounded for the Huskies and passed to Redmon, who dribbled downcourt and set herself up for the winning shot.

Lakisha Freeman had 17 points and nine rebounds to lead Purdue, which blew a second-half lead of 12 points with 10:29 remaining. France had 13 points and eight rebounds for the Boilermakers (4-6).

Sami Whitcomb had 18 points for Washington (5-7), which snapped a three-game losing streak. Sara Mosiman added 14 points and Redmon had 13.

Men’s basketball

Melvin Jones scored 28 points and Humberto Perez added 22 as North Idaho (11-1) beat Highline 97-63 in a non-conference game in Coeur d’Alene.

David Johnson added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Cardinals.

Cody Gilber scored 12 points for Highline (5-6).
