EWU’s Williams player of week

Eastern Washington University leading scorer and rebounder Kellen Williams was selected as the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week after recording double-doubles in a pair of victories last week.

Williams had 16 points and 10 rebounds in EWU’s 84-75 win over Portland on Dec. 17. He then had a season-high 19 points and 11 boards in EWU’s 58-57 Big Sky Conference-opening victory over Portland State last Saturday. He hit the game-winning shot with 5 seconds to play.

The Eagles take a 6-8 record into Saturday’s non-conference home game against UC Santa Barbara (10-2) at 7:05 p.m.

Chiefs back on ice without Cowen

When the Spokane Chiefs take the ice tonight for the first time in two weeks they will be without rookie defenseman Jared Cowen.

Instead of joining the Chiefs after the holiday break, Cowen is off to London, Ontario, to play for Team West at the Under-17 World Hockey Challenge.

Team West, made up of 11 players from each of the provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, left for London on Wednesday and will play in an exhibition game today against Finland. Tournament play begins Saturday against Germany and ends Jan. 8.

Cowen, the first overall selection in the 2006 Bantam Draft, has been as good as advertised in his rookie season. In 35 games played, Cowen has four goals and nine assists and is plus-20, good for sixth in the Western Hockey League.

The Chiefs’ home-and-home series with the Kootenay Ice begins tonight in Cranbrook, British Columbia, and wraps up Saturday at the Arena.
