Education Notebook: Susan Chapin joins Spokane school board
The Spokane Public Schools board of directors welcomed its newest member last week at its regular meeting.
Appointed board member Susan Chapin was sworn in to replace Don Barlow, who was elected to the state Legislature.
Chapin, 50, is no stranger to Spokane schools. She is a graduate of Ferris High School, and both her children currently attend the school.
She also has served on the principal’s advisory council at Ferris and was a representative to the district’s citizen’s advisory committee and other school district boards. Chapin was named a volunteer of the year for Spokane schools for the 2004-05 school year.
To keep her post on the board, Chapin will be required to run again in the November elections. She could choose to run for the remainder of Barlow’s term, which expires in 2009, or could run for one of two other open six-year terms on the board.
Board President Christie Querna and director Barb Richardson have both said they will not seek another term.
Career options
Spokane Community College will host a career open house Feb. 20 from 6 to 8 p.m.
The event will take place on the school campus, 1810 N. Greene St., in the Lair-Student Center Sasquatch and Bigfoot rooms, Building 6.
High school students, parents, teachers, counselors or adults are invited to meet community college instructors and other college staff, and participate in hands-on demonstrations, view labs and classrooms for several career programs, including those required to transfer to a four-year university.
For more information, call 533-7491; to RSVP for the open house call 533-8687.
Educators honored
The Spokane Symphony honored three Spokane Public Schools administrators recently for their support of the arts, and the district announced one of two Distinguished Educator Teams for the first half of 2007.
The symphony’s Outstanding Arts Advocate awards went to Jon Swett and Theresa Meyer, the principal and assistant principal respectively of Lewis and Clark High School, and to Deb Johnson, the director of the district’s Libby Center.
The awards were given during the Jan. 26 symphony concert.
Shadle Park High School instructional coaches Jaki Lake, Beth McGibbon, Linda Hutchinson and Chrissy Allen were named by the district as a Distinguished Educator Team.
The team, composed of two literacy and two math coaches, plans and delivers Shadle’s professional learning programs for teachers.
The Shadle team is one of two identified by the district. A second team identified for the award will be named next month, district officials said.
