Buns and ammo
The 59th annual Dusty Sausage Shoot is scheduled for next Sunday, 9:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m., at the Dusty Gun Club off State Highway 26 west of Colfax.
Sausages are not the targets, they’re the prizes for trapshoooters who break the required number of flying clay targets.
The club was established in 1946, and competing for the homemade sausage has been an almost religious tradition ever since.

Hikers resourceful in rescuing elk
Jason Wilkes and Ben Konesky of the Great Falls-area were hiking in the Little Belt Mountains recently when they saw two elk that seemed unusually close together.
Indeed, the two bulls’ antlers were tangled together with orange bailing twine.
Wilkes grabbed a branch, tied a multi-tool knife to the end and tried to cut away at the twine. But one of the elk jumped and nearly gored him. The men found a longer stick and made a second attempt.
Konesky began sawing as Wilkes filmed the incident.
One bull ran away as soon as it was freed. The older bull, which was too exhausted to get up after the twine was cut loose, later died. One of its legs was disjointed, Wilkes said.
Both men are members of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, which works to improve winter range for elk.
“That’s what it’s all about, helping the elk,” Wilkes said.
