It’s a Woman’s World: Yeah, it’s winter but people do exercise
Has your New Year’s resolution to start a fitness program and lose weight been unsuccessful so far? If so, the cold winter weather isn’t to blame.
Although cold weather might deter you from stepping outside for exercise, there are indoor fitness options to help you stick to your New Year’s resolution. Consider following these exercise programs, recommended by the Mayo Clinic, during the cold winter months.
If your warm-weather fitness routine includes a walk around the neighborhood, relocate that walk to a local mall. You can stay warm while you burn calories — and maybe do some window shopping as you increase your heart rate.
Also, consider joining a health club. Now that the onslaught of New Year’s memberships has subsided, some health clubs may be offering discounts to attract new members. Find a convenient health club, and be sure to talk to the staff before using any equipment.
One benefit of joining a health club is access to an indoor pool. Both swimming and water aerobics provide a great exercise that goes easy on your joints.
You can also consider investing in home-exercise equipment. Choose a piece that is practical and enjoyable. Chances are you’ll be more likely to maintain a regular exercise routine if exercise equipment is readily accessible. To save money, look for used equipment at a sporting-goods resale store or in your local newspaper.
Lastly, if you’re willing to brave the cold weather in the name of exercise, remember to talk to your doctor if you have concerns about exercising in icy conditions. Cold-weather exercise can trigger chest pain or asthma attacks in some people.
With a little creativity, you can establish a fitness schedule this winter while staying warm.
