Betz students publish newspaper

Sara Leaming By Sara Leaming

Students at a Cheney elementary school are looking for a scoop, and it’s not ice cream.

Betz Elementary School recently published the first issue of the Betz Gazette, a newspaper created and written by students at Betz.

The staff of paper meets each Monday to brainstorm story ideas, and then on Thursday’s they type up the stories in the school’s computer lab.

For the first issue, students wrote about students running for fun at recess. There also was an editorial section. They also interviewed teachers and explored the teachers’ lounge, and tackled entertainment and sports.

According to the Cheney Public Schools newsletter, third-grade Betz Gazette staff writers Abby Hammermeister and Hope Gill said the newspaper is a “real challenge because it’s like being a real newspaper reporter.”

Students are working on publishing the second issue of the paper.
