Prep basketball: Northwest Christian, Republic to decide District 7 2B title
Todd Orestad scored 23 points, including 6 for 10 from 3-point range, as Republic boys earned a spot in the District 7 2B championship game Thursday with an 80-51 win over Selkirk at Spokane Falls Community College.
The Tigers (22-1) got double-doubles from Derek Gianukakis, 19 points and 17 rebounds, and Cody Groth, 19 points and 10 rebounds. Nathan Reed scored 10 to lead the Rangers (16-6), who will face Wellpinit at 7:30 tonight at SFCC. Republic will face Northwest Christian Saturday at SFCC.
Elsewhere, Joe Grewe scored 10 of his 14 points in the decisive second quarter and finished with six assists and six steals as Northwest Christian earned a 60-42 win over St. George’s at SFCC to move into the title game. John Graham added 13 points and five assists, and Chase Ramey had 11 points for the Crusaders (22-0). Miles Deife scored 15 to lead the Dragons (16-6), who will face Liberty at 4:30 p.m. today at SFCC. … Andrew Canning scored eight of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter to lead Liberty to a 54-45 win over Reardan in a loser-out game at Spokane Community College. Aaron Weis added 14 points for the Lancers (17-5). Ryan Schulz scored 16 to lead the Indians (12-10). … Wellpinit used a full-court press to force 15 turnovers in the second half and overcome a 30-15 halftime deficit in a 64-50 win over Lind-Ritzville in a loser-out game at SCC. TJ Flett had 15 points and six steals to lead the Redskins (12-10), who got seven points and 10 rebounds from Jake Green. Myles Borth had 14 points, and Jamie Stevenson and Matt Saetre each chipped in 11 for the Broncos (12-10).
“Jeremy Miller made 5 of 7 free throws in the fourth quarter to help LaCrosse-Washtucna hold off Colton 45-35 in a loser-out game of the Whitman County tournament at Endicott. Jared Ayers-Stamper scored a game-high 14 points for the Tigercats (7-13). Thomas Jacobs paced the Wildcats (7-12) with 13 points. LaCrosse-Washtucna will face Rosalia, which beat Sprague-Harrington 48-46, at 6 p.m. today at Endicott for the No. 4 and 5 seeds to districts.
“Cody Smith knocked down three 3-pointers in the second quarter and finished with 11 points as Priest River ran away with a 62-32 win over visiting Timberlake in the Intermountain League. Dustin Lehman chipped in nine points for the Spartans (10-8, 3-3). Logan Cook scored 11 to lead the Tigers (6-12, 3-4).
“David Baker scored 22 points and Josiah Menzies added 20 as Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy (15-3, 7-2) routed host Mullan 88-28 in the North Star League. Steve Coy led the Tigers (1-18, 0-9) with 13 points. … Point guard Mike Martin had 13 points, including 9 for 10 from the free-throw line, nine rebounds and seven assists to lead Clark Fork to a 58-46 win over Wallace. Jared Broggi added 18 points for the Wampus Cats (11-6, 7-1). Darrick Holmquist paced the Miners (10-9, 5-5) with 14 points.
Girls
Freshman Kelly Van Lith notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to help St. John-Endicott top LaCrosse-Washtucna 52-38 in a loser-out game of the Whitman County tournament at Endicott. Ellen Miller finished with 13 points and six rebounds for the Eagles (9-12) while holding Alyssa Koller scoreless in the second and third quarters. SJE outrebounded the Tigercats (10-11) 45-27. Koller scored 16 for LaCrosse-Washtucna and finished her career with more than 1,000 points. Karla Koller added 14 points for the Tigercats. SJE will face Garfield-Palouse, which beat Rosalia 37-36 in overtime, at 8 tonight for the No. 4 and 5 seeds to districts.
