Puget Sound gained a share of first place in the Northwest Conference men’s basketball standings after outlasting No. 13 Whitworth 95-90 at Tacoma on Friday night.

The No. 18 Loggers (17-4, 10-3), who erased a 12-point Whitworth (19-3, 10-3) lead over the final 5:25 of regulation and scored the first 10 points in overtime, were paced by Jason Foster’s 29 points and eight rebounds.

Kevin Hasenfus led a group of five Whitworth players scoring in double figures with 18 points. James Jones added 15, and Bryan Williams and Colin Willemsen chipped in with 14 apiece.

“Todd Cook scored a game-high 21 points and Jake Swartzendruber and Mitch Smith added 16 apiece, leading Blue Mountain (12-11, 5-5) past CC Spokane 67-63 in NWAACC play at Spokane Falls.

Ben Mitchell led the Sasquatch (11-14, 4-6) with 20 points.

Women’s basketball

Laura Hirsh scored a game-high 22 points and Allison Craven added 11 to lead Puget Sound (18-4, 11-2) past Whitworth 73-55 in a Northwest Conference game at Tacoma, Wash.

Alida Bower led the Pirates (13-9, 7-6) in scoring with 12 points, and Susan McDaniel recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

“Liz Beardslee scored 17 points to lead five CC Spokane players in double figures as the Sasquatch (16-7, 6-4) defeated Blue Mountain (2-21, 0-10) 77-34 in NWAACC play at Spokane Falls.

Baseball

After jumping out to a 3-0 lead Gonzaga gave up nine unanswered runs, falling to UC Riverside 9-3 in a non-conference game at Riverside, Calif.

Aaron Wible got the offense going for the Highlanders (4-0) with a three-run homer in the bottom of the second that tied the score at 3.

Evan Wells and Tyson Van Winkle both recorded three hits for the Bulldogs (4-0), while Aaron McGuinness went 2 for 2.

Swimming

Whitworth’s women and Linfield’s men grabbed early leads at the Northwest Conference championships in Walla Walla.

Natalie Turner (500-yard free style), Katelyn Erickson (200 medley) and Brittany Gresset (50 freestyle) all registered winning times for the Pirates, who lead second-place Puget Sound 212-199. The trio, along with Samantha Kephart, won both the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays.

David Dolphay won his second consecutive 500 freestyle for the Whitworth men (156), who trail Puget Sound (158) and Linfield (185).

The Whitworth men were disqualified for an early exchange in the 400 medley relay, costing them 34 points.

Junior hockey

Tyler Shedden scored two goals and added an assist to lead Beaver Valley past Spokane 6-2 in a KIJHL game.

Jason Greenwell made 30 saves in net for the visiting Braves.
