» Just about everyone is aware that Valentine's Day is on Wednesday (men, take note).

» With that comes the annual tradition of kids exchanging valentines at school.

» If you're tired of the usual Barbie and superhero offerings, take the kids out to the Otis Orchards Library this week to make their own.

» Kids can drop in anytime during library hours today, Tuesday and Wednesday. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

» There's no charge, so stop by the library at 22324 E. Wellesley Ave, and let your kids cut, glue and draw to their heart's content.

» Yes, the weather is dreary.

» Yes, it's much too soon to be puttering out in the garden.

» But now is the perfect time to start planning what you want to do in the yard this year and learn more about how to get the best from your plants.

Washington State University Extension is offering its horticulture class series starting Thursday.

» The class will provide research-based horticulture and gardening information for home gardeners and horticulture professionals.

» Topics include soils and composting, plant disease, vegetable gardening, landscape design and maintenance, insect management, and herbicides.

» The 12-week class is offered each Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. through May 3 at the WSU Extension Center, 222 N. Havana St.

» The fee is $175, which includes all classes, handouts and a copy of the Sustainable Gardening Handbook.
