Ponderosa invites alumni to fun run

Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire speaks with a group of about two dozen students on Wednesday in the library at University High School. Ponderosa Elementary has a tradition going back 25 years – the school’s annual fun run.

To mark the anniversary, Ponderosa plans to celebrate with a call to all former students who want to take another run through history.

The school’s alumni can return for the two-mile fun run on April 20.

“We are trying to learn more about the early days of the fun run but are having trouble identifying and tracking down early organizers,” said current organizer Bob Peregoy.

He is asking those who might know the history to contact him at 926-7516 or call the school at 228-4450.

“In addition, we are trying to get the word out to Ponderosa Elementary alumni to let them know we would like them to come back for this year’s run. We know the fun run has touched a lot of Valley residents and think that many of them would be interested in coming back for this homecoming of sorts.”

Fun run registration starts at 5 p.m. on April 20 with the run at 6:30.

Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, and commemorative T-shirts will be available to order.

CVSD will e-mail district information

Staying informed about the latest updates from Central Valley School District could be an e-mail away.

CVSD has launched a new communication vehicle called Key Communicator Network. Those who register will receive timely information about Central Valley Schools directly from Superintendent Mike Person to their desktops.

The Key Communicator Network is designed to be a loose-knit group of opinion leaders who agree to receive a regular stream of detailed school information about current issues and pass the information along to others.

To join the network, visit www.cvsd.org and click on “Join the Key Communicator Network” under the heading of news, then district initiatives.

Students, teacher breakfast together

North Pines Middle School has started a new “Take a Student to Breakfast” program.

Nineteen North Pines Middle School students were recently invited to enjoy breakfast with 20 teachers and school administrators before school at Conley’s Restaurant.

The students were selected by their teachers in recognition of their achievements for the first trimester.

Each trimester, the Take a Student to Breakfast program will ask teachers to invite a student to breakfast to recognize their efforts and develop positive relationships to help students succeed. Conley’s Restaurant is supporting the new program by providing a free breakfast for each student with the purchase of an adult breakfast.

Participating students included: Phillip Baklamov, William Beirouty, Madison Boyer, Nate Conley, Michael Fode, Heather Fuson, Kristina Garcia, Aaron Guilford, Lexus Harris, Sam Howell, Daniel Lemus, Michael Masters, Alyssa McLeslie, Natasha Musgrove, Eric Pedraza, Jessica Pedraza, Farrah Taylor, Thanh-Thu Truong and Kaden Woolf.

Family carnival planned at CVHS

Tickets are on sale now to “New Orleans Lives!,” a family carnival hosted by Central Valley High School’s junior class.

The carnival is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 24, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The Mardi Gras-themed event will feature games, prizes, crafts, jugglers and magicians, along with food, live music and dancing.

Central Valley High School is hosting the event to offer a fun, safe activity for families with young children in the winter and also provide a positive connection for high school and elementary students.

Admission for children ages 3 to 11 is $6 before Feb. 21 or $8 at the door.

Parent admission is free.
