Stuckey earns another weekly honor

The Spokesman-Review

For the seventh time in his short, illustrious career, Eastern Washington sophomore Rodney Stuckey is the Big Sky Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week.

Stuckey had two of the six highest-scoring games in the 56 he has played for the Eagles – and the top two this season – as EWU split home games with Weber State and Portland State.

He scored 34 in a win over league-leading Weber State on Feb. 7 and 36 in a loss to Portland State three days later, hitting 24 of 41 field goals. He also averaged 7.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 4.0 steals per game.

College baseball

Gonzaga senior Clayton Mortensen earned his first West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honor after leading the Bulldogs to their first win of the season Sunday, 3-2 over UC Riverside.

Mortensen (1-1) pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run, on six hits and three walks, while striking out a career-high 11. He held the Highlanders hitless until the fifth inning and held them scoreless until the seventh.

It’s the first time since the 2003 season a Bulldogs pitcher has struck out 10 or more in a game. The right hander has a team-leading 17 strikeouts in two outings this season.
