Funding for community centers OK’d

City funding for three of Spokane’s community centers was approved this week among a series of actions affecting neighborhoods.

The West Central Community Center will receive $135,000; Northeast Community Center, $121,000; and Peaceful Valley Community Center, $30,000.

In other business, the City Council agreed to continue leasing space at the East Central Community Center to Spokane Neighborhood Action Programs for $43,230 during 2007. SNAP is a long-term tenant at the center, providing key programs to local residents.

The council approved a contract with Larson’s Demolition to remove a dilapidated garage at 1428 E. Liberty Ave., which was ordered to be torn down by the city’s building official. The contract is for $1,808, including tax.

In another matter, the council set a public hearing for March 12 for a request to relinquish public right of way for 25th Avenue from Scenic Boulevard to 150 feet to the east. The street vacation is being requested by Dave and Jane Lehnertz in the Grandview/Thorpe Neighborhood.

Public hearings on formation of two local improvement districts were set for March 13 at City Hall before the city hearing examiner. The first at 1:30 p.m. is for street improvements to 27th Avenue from Freya to Rebecca streets in Lincoln Heights.

The second hearing is set for 2:30 p.m. for paving of the alley between Mission and Augusta avenues and Augusta Avenue from Ruby Street to the east side of vacated Pearl Street in the Logan Neighborhood.
