Keep theory in its place
The letter submitted by J.E. Hill advocates moving Darwin’s theory of evolution from theory to scientific fact (“Darwin endures,” Feb. 13). Hill’s letter deifies Darwin while attacking religious objectors. Hill ignores the possibility that Darwin’s theory remains a “theory” for good reason.
In reality, the idea of evolution preceded Darwin. What science credits to Darwin is evolution through natural selection. Modern science discoveries in DNA, chromosomes, etc. have uncovered evidence contradictory to the theory of evolution (specifically macro-evolution or evolution from one species to another). The book “Darwin’s Black Box” documents some of this evidence (try reading it alongside “The Origin of Species.” I’ve read both; judge for yourself).
Darwin based his theory solely on observation. A theory does not become scientific fact solely by observation. People once accepted the world as flat based on observation. By Hill’s logic, scientists should have promoted that theory to scientific fact. Isn’t it possible posterity may look back on the theory of evolution in the same light we look at the theory that the world is flat?
Progressive science clearly deems evolution as theory. Hill’s failure to recognize such sheds light on a lack of research. His letter exemplifies the dogmatic rhetoric he seeks to denounce.
