Zags gave it their all

The Spokesman-Review

I have enjoyed watching GU basketball since the early ‘90s when I loved watching Dan Fitzgerald’s players who, win or lose, put everything they had into the game. Today, I laugh a bit when I hear all the so-called experts who have opinions about the current troubles of GU.

The Spokane community has been truly blessed to witness the growth of such a tremendous school and sports program. While it is unfortunate two kids made a horrendous mistake that requires punishment, the GU fans shouldn’t overlook the courageous efforts of the other players on the team.

Everyone seems so critical of their play against Santa Clara, but I saw players named Mallon, Pendo, Pargo, Bouldin, and of course, their leader Derek Raivio, put it all on the floor.

From the outset, Santa Clara was red hot, and with the inconsistency of GU’s inside game throughout this year, I doubt that even with the big guy we would have won this game. The shots for GU didn’t fall and the free throws bounced out, but what I love most about these guys is that they gave 110 percent and almost pulled out a victory.

Genuine GU fans know the glass is more than half full. The players on this team exhibit big hearts and sound character. Without a doubt, coach Mark Few’s team will recover and come back stronger than ever.
