Possible arson among fire calls

After a two-week dip in calls, crews from Spokane Valley Fire handled 202 emergencies in the week between Feb. 13 and Monday.

There were eight reports of structure fires. One, in a garage at the 1700 block of North Glenn Road on Feb. 17, is under investigation as a possible arson, said department spokesman Bill Clifford.

There also was an illegal burn at the 11300 block of East Fourth Avenue on the morning of Feb. 15, he said.

Two car fires turned out to be minor, Clifford said, and all 12 fire alarms proved to be minor or false.

Firefighters were called to four hazardous materials incidents, including a five-gallon fuel spill at a gas station on the 1000 block of North Sullivan Road.

Of nine vehicle accidents, four required transportation of injured people to the hospital.

There were also four service calls, most notably a complaint at 4:45 p.m. on Feb. 13 that a cat was trapped in someone’s wall.

“By the time we got there, the cat had gotten out,” Clifford said.

Responses to 163 medical calls rounded out the week.
