Assault suspects brought back

From Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

Two men accused of beating, robbing and leaving a 73-year-old Spokane man for dead last month, before fleeing to Illinois, have been returned to Spokane.

Matthew E. Fogal, 19, of Waterfall, Pa., and David W. Welsh, 21, of Rockhill Furnace, Pa., are being held on $1 million bail in Spokane County Jail on charges of first-degree assault, robbery and possession of stolen property.

Richard Schumm, who lay bleeding for nearly 24 hours before being found, suffered multiple cuts and broken bones, police said. He was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center where he remained for several days before being released, hospital officials said Thursday.

Fogal and Welsh, both of Pennsylvania, were in Spokane to try out for a heavy metal band, police said. The two were renting a room in the home where Schumm lived on the lower South Hill. The men were at the home for about 10 days before allegedly assaulting and shooting Schumm last month.

Police say the men stole Schumm’s car and were attempting to return home when they were captured in Joliet, Ill., on Jan. 18. The men arrived at Spokane County Jail on Feb. 15.
