Sandpoint’s top seeds off to perfect start

Sandpoint’s top seeds had a perfect first day in the Bulldogs’ pursuit of a seventh state team wrestling title.

The Bulldogs received victories from all six of their first- and second-seeded wrestlers Thursday during the first of a three-day run at the State 4A championships at Idaho State’s Holt Arena in Pocatello.

Sandpoint, ranked first in state according to Idahowrestlingnews.com, got wins from top-seeded Timmy Pepperdine (103 pounds), second seed Alec Ward (112), top seed Joey Fio (125), top seed Kyle Meschko (152), second seed Jerod Morris (171) and top seed Taylor Morris (189).

Blackfoot leads the team standings with 47.5 points. Lakeland is in eighth place with 28.5 points following wins from No. 2 seeds Brandon Richardson (119) and Tim Klippert (130) and top seed Zach Horsley (145). Sandpoint finished in 10th place with 25 points, and Moscow is 22nd with seven points.

In 5A action, Coeur d’Alene finished the first day tied for fifth place with 28.5 points following a pair of wins from No. 2 seeds Jesse Nielson (152) and Jeremy Zabel (160). Lewiston sits a half-point behind the Vikings in seventh place with wins from second seed Tracey Huffman (112) and top seed Mark Skogrand (285).

Post Falls finished the day in 10th place with 16 points. The Trojans got wins from second seed Ryan Booth (145) and top seed Duane Carr (189). Defending champion Idaho Falls leads after the first day with 46.5 points. Lake City finished with three points and is in 19th place.

In 3A action, Shelly leads favorites American Falls and Weiser with 58.5 points for first place. Bonners Ferry finished the day in ninth place with 23 points. Top seed Ken Swift (152) won his opening match for the Badgers. Timberlake and Kellogg finished tied for 11th place with 20 points. No. 1 seeds Patrick Neal (125) and David Hayes (140) earned wins for the Tigers. Priest River, in a three-way tie for 16th place with 16.5 points, and St. Maries, 19th place with 16 points, round out the other area teams.
