ASU wins again
Emily Westerberg (Central Valley) scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half, including key free throws down the stretch, to give No. 10 Arizona State (26-3, 16-2 Pac-10) a 59-54 victory over Arizona (10-20, 4-14) on Saturday in Tucson, Ariz.
The win gave Arizona State a single-season school record for victories, passing the previous mark set in 1982.
Westerberg made four free throws in the final 15 seconds to hold off a late charge by the Wildcats, who trailed by 10 with 4:50 left in the game. In the process Westerberg became the school’s sixth all-time leading scorer with 1,262 points.
ASU also got 16 points from Aubree Johnson (Post Falls).
(3) Connecticut 92, Villanova 49: At Hartford, Conn., Tina Charles had 21 points and 13 rebounds to help the Huskies (26-2, 15-0) rout the Wildcats (7-21, 1-14).
The freshman center scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds by halftime against the Wildcats. Charles played just 25 minutes.
(17) Middle Tennessee 76, Florida Atlantic 63: At Murfreesboro, Tenn., Krystle Horton scored 27 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Blue Raiders (26-3, 18-0 Sun Belt) to a win over the Owls (6-24, 2-16).
Chrissy Givens scored 31 points for the second straight game to lead the Blue Raiders.
Ohio 70, (18) Bowling Green 67: At Bowling Green, Ohio, Rachel Frederick hit four free throws in the final 2 1/2 minutes to lead the Bobcats (16-11, 9-6 MAC) over the Falcons (25-3, 14-1), ending the nation’s longest home winning streak at 29 games.
(19) Marquette 75, South Florida 63: At Milwaukee, Christina Quaye scored 26 points and Krystal Ellis added 21 to lead the Golden Eagles (23-5, 11-4 Big East) to a victory over the Bulls (18-10, 8-7).
(21) Rutgers 76, Notre Dame 60: At South Bend, Ind., Matee Ajavon scored a season-high 26 points, Essence Carson added 17 and the Scarlet Knights (19-7, 12-3 Big East) used a tight man-to-man defense to slow the Irish (19-9, 10-5) en route to a victory.
The Knights scored 21 points off 16 turnovers by the Irish.
(23) Louisville 68, Syracuse 56: At Syracuse, N.Y., Angel McCoughtry scored 20 points and Brandi Radde added 15 for the Cardinals (24-5, 10-5 Big East) in a win over the Orange (9-19, 3-12).
Nicole Michael’s 17 points gave the freshman 470 points on the season, the most ever by a Syracuse freshman.
(24) Wisconsin-Green Bay 84, Butler 70: At Green Bay, Wis., Nicole Soulis scored 19 points and Amanda Popp added 18 points and seven rebounds as the Phoenix (23-3, 14-0 Horizon League) defeated the Bulldogs.
Oklahoma St. 63, (25) Nebraska 60: At Stillwater, Okla., Andrea Riley scored 17 points and Rashidat Sadiq added 16 as the Cowgirls (19-9, 7-8 Big 12) upset the Cornhuskers (21-8, 9-6).
After shooting only 25 percent in the first half, the Cowgirls started the second half on a 12-2 run to take a 32-26 lead on Sadiq’s layup. They never trailed again.
