The Spokesman-Review

FUD (n.)

Slang and techno jargon for fear, uncertainty and doubt. Used widely in casting aspersions on the other company’s products. As Wikipedia explains, FUD was first defined by Gene Amdahl after he left IBM to found his own company, Amdahl Corp.: “FUD is the fear, uncertainty, and doubt that IBM sales people instill in the minds of potential customers who might be considering Amdahl products.”

In Scottish slang, it has a totally different meaning.
