Longhorns take down 10th-ranked Purdue
Tiffany Jackson scored 20 points and Texas hit four free throws in the final 22 seconds to snap No. 10 Purdue’s seven-game winning streak with a 64-61 victory Sunday in Austin, Texas.
The free throws by Jackson and Earnesia Williams helped the Longhorns (11-4) secure the win after Purdue’s FahKara Malone hit consecutive layups that pulled the Boilermakers (14-3) within one.
Williams’ two free throws with 13 seconds left scored the final points, and Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton’s last 3-point attempt for Purdue bounced off the front of the rim.
(3) Duke 86, Virginia Tech 54: At Blacksburg, Va., Abby Waner and Lindsey Harding had 20 points each and the Blue Devils defeated the Hokies in an Atlantic Coast Conference game.
Wanisha Smith added 14 points and Carrem Gay had 11 for the Blue Devils (16-0, 2-0), who had 32 fastbreak points to four for Tech (10-7, 1-2).
(6) LSU 57, (15) Georgia 55: At Baton Rouge, La., Sylvia Fowles scored with 54 seconds remaining in the game to lead the Tigers past the Bulldogs (13-1, 1-1) in a Southeastern Conference game.
Fowles led LSU (15-1, 1-0) with 20 points and Quianna Chaney added 15 points.
Mississippi 76, (11) Vanderbilt 66: At Oxford, Miss., Armintie Price had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Rebels (13-4, 2-0 SEC) to a win that snapped the Commodores’ (14-2, 1-1 SEC) six game winning streak.
Price made three steals to become the school’s career leader with 336. She entered the game tied with her coach, Carol Ross.
Mississippi St. 81, (20) Arkansas 73: At Fayetteville, Ark., Marneshia Richard had 23 points and four steals to lead the Lady Bulldogs (10-5, 1-0) past the Razorbacks (15-3, 0-2) in a Southeastern Conference game.
Utah 49, (25) New Mexico 48: At Albuquerque, N.M., Jessica Perry scored 13 points, including the winning basket with 1:34 left in the Utes (9-6, 2-0) slight victory over the Lobos (10-5, 0-2) that snapped New Mexico’s 35-game home winning streak in Mountain West Conference games.
