Today’s project
Characterized by its use of common materials, forthright construction and functionality, Craftsman-style furniture first became popular at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, original pieces of Craftsman furniture have become valuable antiques, and reproductions are featured in a variety of catalogs, magazines and furniture stores.
Now do-it-yourselfers can enjoy classic Craftsman style at a fraction of the cost of original (and even reproduction) pieces. This bookcase project features three adjustable shelves behind tempered-glass doors. True to the pieces that inspired the design, its clean lines and handsome proportions will complement many decors.
Made of oak — the traditional choice, although other woods will work — the project utilizes straightforward construction techniques, making it easy enough for beginners. Most of the cuts are straight, and the one curved cut (for the skirt) is traced from a full-size pattern. The bookcase can be finished clear, as pictured, or stained dark for a more traditional look.
The project measures 60 inches tall by 36 inches wide by 12 inches deep.
The Craftsman Bookcase plan, No 863, is $9.95 and includes step-by-step instructions with photos, full-size patterns, construction diagrams, a materials list and cutting layout and a toll-free help line for project questions.
A package of bookcase plans, No. C118, is $21.95 and includes this plan plus two others. A catalog picturing hundreds of do-it-yourself projects is $2. Please include $4 for postage and handling (except catalog-only orders) and allow about two weeks for delivery.
