Wintering fly fishers submit to vises

Serious fly fishers don’t chill during the cold months. They fill their fly boxes with patterns they’ll use the rest of the year.

Locally, individual fly tiers and clubs have scheduled courses on fly-tying, as well as rod building and complete fly-fishing schools. Among them:

White’s Outdoor: A five session fly-tying course ($65, tools and materials included) with G.L. Britton started this week. Also a three-session rod-building class ($60, plus blank and components) with Steve Moran begins Feb. 2. Info: 535-1875.

Sportsman’s Warehouse: An eight-week fly-tying course ($100, tools and materials included) with John Newberry, runs eight consecutive Saturdays starting 2 p.m., Jan. 20. Info: 891-1900.

Spokane Fly Fishers: The annual comprehensive Fly Fishing School ($100 adults or $10 for youths under 17; includes course materials) starts Feb. 15 and runs through March 22 with evening sessions and some weekend clinics. Info: (509) 464-1090 or www.spokanefly fishers.com/Default.shtml.

Institute for Extended Learning: The Community Colleges have scheduled a fly-tying class ($62) by Jan Sadlo starting Wednesday and running weekly through Feb. 7.

A fly-fishing course ($62) taught by members of the Inland Empire Fly Fishing Club starts Jan. 22 and runs through March 5.

Both courses will be held at Ferris High School. Info: (509) 279-6000.
