Deer Park’s Winterfest plans all-day fun
Folks wishing for a community festival don’t have to wait for the heat of Hoopfest. They can head to Deer Park this Saturday for the 22nd annual Winterfest, sponsored by the Deer Park Kiwanis. Winterfest is perfect for those who prefer a “cooler” festival.
Most activities will originate at Deer Park Civic Center across the street from City Hall. Filled with activities for people of all ages, Winterfest is a great way to “get rid of winter blahs,” according to volunteer Flo Moore. She’s looking forward to this year’s ice sculpture demonstration.
“I love to see the creativity and what can be made from ice,” she said.
The Frostbite 5K Footrace is part of the part of the Bloomsday Runner series and is expected to attract 200 to 300 runners, including a 15-year-old from Canada.
“We also received a registration from a soldier deployed overseas, who’s hoping to be home on leave in time for the race,” said Chris Clark, Kiwanis president and event chairman.
Neighbors needing to burn off a few holiday calories can sign up to play Broomball, or participate in the outhouse race. Teams of four, with a fifth member inside, will push outhouses mounted on skis across the west City Hall lawn at noon.
Those who prefer less vigorous indoor activities can enjoy the art show in City Hall or pick up some great winter reading at the Deer Park Library used book sale.
Videogame players can compete in a Halo 2 contest, and a card game tournament will feature Warhammer and Yu-Gi-Oh, as well as other games. Young chess players will compete in a tournament at Arcadia Elementary School.
A bonfire built from discarded Christmas trees is planned for the evening, and a fireworks display will light up the night sky.
For Clark, the perfect end to Winterfest is the Community Dance.
“People who enjoy musical events in the Deer Park area love this year’s featured swing band, The Men of Rhythm,” she said. “Winterfest is truly an intergenerational community celebration.”
