Dogs, cats overflowing SCRAPS
Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service, SCRAPS, is overflowing with cats and dogs, reports director Nancy Hill.
“We went from being half empty to overfull in three days,” Hill said.
SCRAPS has received assistance from the rescue and sheltering community. Spokane Humane Society, Kootenai Humane Society, Seattle King County Humane Society, Partners for Pets, and Humane Evacuation Animal Rescue Team took some of the animals.
“Even with our discounted adoption fee, we can’t get these animals adopted fast enough,” said Hill. “The community needs to spay and neuter their pets. The volume of unwanted pets in our area is staggering.”
The greater Spokane area has approximately 94,461 cats and 88,806 dogs. Only 70,000 of those pets are licensed through either SpokAnimal or SCRAPS. Unidentified animals are being taken to local shelters as strays. SCRAPS handled more than 7,600 unwanted animals in 2006.
Adoptions include spay/neuter, license, microchip, initial vaccinations and a complimentary vet check.
The reduced adoption fee is $20 off the regular fee, or $35.69 for cats and $55.03 for dogs, good through Jan. 31.
