Tar Heels handle Terrapins
Ivory Latta scored a season-high 32 points, and the unbeaten Tar Heels defeated No. 3 Maryland with an 84-71 victory Sunday night in College Park, Md.
Latta made four 3-pointers and the Tar Heels (23-0, 7-0 ACC) made eight of their first nine shots in the second half to open up a 55-35 lead with 15 minutes remaining. Although the Terrapins (21-2, 5-2) eventually got within one point, they couldn’t complete the comeback.
(4) Tennessee 80, Alabama 51: At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Shannon Bobbitt scored 20 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead the Lady Vols (19-2, 6-0 Southeastern Conference) to a victory over the Crimson Tide (10-12, 0-7).
(8) LSU 65, Auburn 45: At Baton Rouge, La., Sylvia Fowles recorded the 50th double-double of her career with 19 points and 20 rebounds helping the Lady Tigers (20-2, 6-1 SEC) beat the Tigers (15-7, 2-4).
(11) George Washington 71, La Salle 47: At Philadelphia, Sarah-Jo Lawrence scored 20 points to lead the Colonials (18-2, 7-0 Atlantic 10) past the Explorers (15-7, 3-4).
The Explorers missed 22 of their first 23 shots.
(14) Georgia 77, Florida 54: At Gainesville, Fla., Tasha Humphrey scored 19 points and Ashley Houts added 16 to help the Lady Bulldogs (18-4, 5-2 SEC) beat the Lady Gators (6-16, 0-7).
(15) Vanderbilt 61, Arkansas 34: At Fayetteville, Ark., Carla Thomas scored 18 points to lead the Commodores (18-4, 4-3 SEC) to a win over the Razorbacks (17-5, 3-4).
Vanderbilt allowed just 10 field goals in the game.
(16) Bowling Green 72, Eastern Michigan 55: At Ypsilanti, Mich., Kate Achter scored 22 points to lead the Falcons (18-2, 8-0 Mid-American Conference) to a win over the Eagles (11-8, 6-2).
(19) Middle Tennessee 84, Louisiana-Lafayette 57: At Murfreesboro, Tenn., Chrissy Given scored 23 points to help the Blue Raiders (19-3, 11-0) defeat the Ragin’ Cajuns (17-6, 9-3).
Middle Tennessee shot just 28.9 percent from the field and 13 percent from 3-point range in the first half.
Mississippi St. 73, (22) Mississippi 71: At Oxford, Miss., Marneshia Richard’s shot at the buzzer lifted the Bulldogs (13-8, 4-3 SEC) to a 73-71 win over the Rebels (16-6, 5-2).
Richard’s shot came after Ashley Awkward had tied the game at 71 on a 3-pointer with 6.3 seconds remaining.
Rutgers 63, (23) Michigan State 57: At Piscataway, N.J., Essence Carson scored seven of her 21 points in the final 2:38 to lift the Scarlet Knights (12-6) to a win over the Spartans (15-6).
