In brief: County seeks records, maps of cemeteries

The Spokesman-Review

Spokane County commissioners want help in caring for two pioneer cemeteries and finding cemetery records.

Commission Chairman Mark Richard said county officials want to find and preserve maps and other documents from the Wood Cemetery at Valleyford and the Mica Cemetery. The cemeteries became county responsibilities when the Mica and Valleyford townships were dissolved.

“These cemeteries have great historical value,” Richard said. “We want to preserve this link to our heritage and honor the pioneers who came before us.”

Commissioners recently allocated $7,000 to clean up the heavily overgrown cemeteries, and Parks and Recreation Department crews were dispatched to trim bushes, mow the grass and spray for weeds. Richard said commissioners hope to establish partnerships with volunteer groups or nonprofit organizations for ongoing maintenance.

He asked volunteers or anyone with information about cemetery records to call county spokeswoman Martha Lou Wheatley-Billeter at 477-7195.
