Fund honors Kellogg High grad killed in Iraq
Friends of a 1984 Kellogg High School graduate killed in action May 9 in Iraq are raising money for a scholarship fund in his memory.
The Brad Conner Memorial Scholarship Fund was established last month. More than $9,000 has been donated for the fund, which will help Kellogg High graduates pursue a college education.
Sgt. Maj. Bradly Conner, 41, was killed in an explosion while serving his fourth tour in Iraq. A highly decorated member of the U.S. Army Special Forces, Conner was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
Conner was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, based in Fort Lewis, Wash. He fought in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, including the capture of Baghdad International Airport. Conner’s convoy was ambushed near Al-Hillah, about 60 miles south of Baghdad, on May 9. He was fatally wounded when an improvised explosive device struck the M1114 armored personnel carrier in which he was riding.
Organizers of the scholarship fund have put together a golf scramble, dinner, raffle and silent auction for Saturday at Shoshone Golf and Tennis Club. The scramble will start at 3 p.m. A social hour with a no-host bar will be at 7 p.m., with a steak dinner to follow.
The scramble is full, but dinner tickets are still available for $25. Reservations must be made by Tuesday.
Raffle and silent auction items include rounds of golf at local courses, including the Coeur d’Alene Resort. Other prizes include a night for two at the resort, specially engraved Buck Knives and Silver Mountain Resort ski passes. Dave Smith Chevrolet is sponsoring a hole-in-one prize of a Dodge Ram 4X4.
