Police dog tracks down fleeing felon

From Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

A wanted felon used a police scanner to avoid spike strips Thursday, but he couldn’t escape from a police dog.

Sonny Wiggins, 32, was arrested on warrants accusing him of escaping Department of Corrections custody, obstructing justice, drug possession and driving with a suspended license and new charges of attempting to elude police, DUI and hit and run after a high-speed chase in northwest Spokane about 11:30 p.m.

Wiggins was spotted in the West Central neighborhood by Police Cpl. Kurt Vigesaa, but Wiggins sped off when Vigesaa tried to pull him over, according to a release.

Wiggins used a police scanner to avoid spike strips placed to stop him in the Shadle Park area, but he crashed his car into a light pole and ran away, police said.

Police dog Var, led by Officer Danny Lesser, then found Wiggins hiding in a yard.
