In brief: Council to discuss residential zoning

The Spokesman-Review

At its meeting Tuesday, the Spokane Valley City Council will take public comments on proposed changes to the city’s residential zoning.

As they reviewed Spokane Valley’s new development code, Planning Commission and council members have expressed differing ideas about how small new lots should be in existing neighborhoods.

The commission voted to keep many areas zoned about four houses per acre. The council has floated the idea of allowing six or seven houses per acre in most of the city.

The council’s regular meeting takes place 6 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 11707 E. Sprague Ave.

Land purchased for planned park

The City Council Tuesday approved the final land purchase for a park near the corner of Mission Avenue and Long Road.

Spokane Valley paid $310,000 plus closing costs for the 4.26-acre lot. It completes an 8-acre tract the city plans to develop next to land owned by Central Valley School District.

The city will use a state grant to pay for roughly half of the $600,000 total for the park land.

Under a lease agreement with the city, the person residing on the recently purchased property will continue to live there for two years.

The city will not begin construction on the park until at least 2009 as it plans on applying for more grant money to help build it.
