Devil Rays 5, Royals 1: At St. Petersburg, Fla., J.P. Howell pitched eight impressive innings in his first start this season, and Tampa Bay got solo homers from Delmon Young and Carlos Pena in a victory over Kansas City. Howell gave up five hits and struck out seven.
Blue Jays 4, White Sox 3: At Toronto, Adam Lind made up for a baserunning blunder by driving home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, helping the Blue Jays beat Chicago. In the fifth inning Lind was thrown out for leaving second base early while trying to tag up on Vernon Wells’ sacrifice fly.
Tigers 9, Indians 2: At Cleveland, Jeremy Bonderman stayed unbeaten despite another shaky first inning, and Detroit defeated the Indians. Gary Sheffield hit a two-run homer for Detroit. Bonderman (5-0) gave up a two-run homer to Victor Martinez four batters in before shutting Cleveland down.
Angels 4, Orioles 3: At Anaheim, Calif., Vladimir Guerrero hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off Chris Ray, and Los Angeles pulled out a victory over Baltimore after being held to one hit through the first seven innings by Jeremy Guthrie.
Athletics 4, Twins 2: At Oakland, Calif., Nick Swisher, Eric Chavez and Bobby Crosby each drove in runs to help the Athletics beat Minnesota. Johan Santana struck out four but also walked a season-high four batters for the Twins. He allowed four runs, three earned, and five hits in six innings.
Yankees 6, Red Sox 5: At Boston, Alex Rodriguez’s solo home run on a 0-2 pitch from star closer Jonathan Papelbon gave New York a come-from-behind victory over the Red Sox. Brian Bruney got the win and Mariano Rivera earned his fifth save.
