Free fishing day means family fun
The state of Idaho is offering free fishing on Saturday.
According to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, it’s the only day of the year when no fishing license is required.
To show that fishing can be a sport the whole family will enjoy and to instruct and provide information to new anglers, several free events have been planned.
In Post Falls and Rathdrum, youth fishing derbies are being offered by the local park and recreation departments.
Kids up to age 16 will have the chance to catch up to two 10- to 12-inch trout that have been stocked by the Department of Fish and Game.
Bring your fishing rod and join in the fun. If you don’t have a rod, one will be provided.
Registration is open through the day of the event. Call 687-2399 for more information about the Rathdrum derby or 773-0539 for information about the Post Falls event.
Free events in the Panhandle include:
“Bonners Ferry – Snow Creek pond, 9 a.m. to noon
“Calder – Calder pond, 9 a.m. to noon
“Clark Fork – Clark Fork Lodge pond, 9 a.m. to noon
“Coeur d’Alene – Ponderosa Springs Golf Course, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
“Enaville – Steamboat Ponds, 9 a.m. to noon
“Mullan – Lucky Friday pond, 9 a.m. to noon
“Post Falls – Post Falls Park pond, 9 a.m. to noon
“Priest Lake – Priest Lake Golf Course, 9 a.m. to noon
“Rathdrum – Rathdrum City Park, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“Sandpoint (near Sagle) – Round Lake State Park, 9 a.m. to noon
Although fishing will be free, all other fishing rules and regulations will apply, so check out the catch limit and other information before you head out to that new fishing hole.

Welcome Rathdrum Counseling Center
The Rathdrum Area Chamber of Commerce recently held the first of several ribbon-cutting ceremonies planned this summer.
Chamber members welcomed the Rathdrum Counseling Center with a ceremony last Friday.
The counseling service, a first for Rathdrum, offers comprehensive community-based mental health services, including counseling and psychotherapy for adults, children, families and couples; psychosocial rehabilitation services for people with chronic mental illness; recovery services for alcohol- and drug-related problems; and elder services.
A group geared toward women’s issues meets at 7 p.m. on Mondays, and other groups will be organized.
The Rathdrum Counseling Center is at 15636 N. Highway 41. Call 687-0538.
Rathdrum chamber busy growing
The Rathdrum Area Chamber of Commerce has grown to 138 members, and lots of changes are going on, according to board member Rondi Renaldo.
An electronic newsletter will be delivered to members beginning next month.
It will include the names of all chamber members, a featured business article, a list of new members, a city news update from City Administrator Brett Boyer and words from chamber President Jeff Smith.
Updated welcome packets, including a new chamber brochure and a newly published Rathdrum map, are being provided to those joining the chamber. All chamber forms also have been standardized.
Seeking new members, the chamber is sponsoring a membership drive called the Spring Fling, said Renaldo.
“If any member brings someone to a meeting and that person joins the chamber, both get a free lunch,” she said.
Also in the planning stages are a golf scramble and a business networking event.
The chamber meets the third Thursday of each month at 11:45 a.m. at the Route 53 Diner.
