Sports club boosts family ties
The former Spokane Valley Sports Club has reinvented itself.
Ownership of the club remains the same California-based group, but the private facility is changing under new local executive manager Scott Sherman, who is responsible for the changes.
As of May 31, the club became Legend The Sports Club. And its focus is shifting to family-oriented sports activities that are expected to draw both members and nonmembers to facilities that include new basketball/volleyball courts, complete with new backboards, scoreboards and bleachers.
“The most unique aspect of this facility is the family-friendly programs,” Sherman said. “While the kids are at basketball or volleyball practice, the parents can be using the club. The whole family can have all of their sports and fitness needs taken care of in one location at one time.”
A family membership currently costs $68 per month and Sherman says he’s waiving registration fees at least through the summer to celebrate the club’s new course. Membership does not require an annual contract and instead is still on a month-to-month basis.
But the most notable change is the decision to allow nonmembers to use the courts.
“We are the only private athletic club in the region with court space that can be rented out,” Sherman said.
Sherman, who has been on the job for the past two months, envisions the club as a hub for such activities as youth basketball league practices and tournaments, as well as club volleyball.
Sherman has directed the installation of two mostly competed courts where two indoor tennis courts once were located. Another new court was installed adjacent to an existing court in a different area. The planned upgrade also includes a new aerobics workout room and a sports café and bar that is scheduled for completion this fall.
In all, the facility has 60,000 square feet and offers typical workout and weight machines, instructors, personal trainers, an indoor pool and spa, and several racquetball courts.
Sherman, 41, has had about 15 years in sports club management in the Puget Sound area and in Spokane. He said he envisioned the family-oriented sports and fitness complex idea nearly a decade ago and that Spokane Valley is an ideal location for the concept in part because of its growth and support of youth sports.
Legend wants to help teams gear up for Spokane’s annual Hoopfest basketball competition by hosting its first All-Star 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament June 16 and 17. A week-long basketball camp to prepare teams for Hoopfest begins June 25. Sessions are available for kids in grades 3 to 9 and costs $80 per team.
