Locally: WSU athletic department recognized for diversity

The Washington State athletic department is one of four recipients of the inaugural “Opportunity Awards,” presented by the Women’s Sports Foundation.

The Opportunity Awards were created in an effort to recognize schools that consistently provide equitable opportunities to their female student-athletes. WSU is the West region recipient.

Awards

The Greater Spokane League has announced the spring winners of the National Electrical Contractors Association and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers GSL award.

A male and female from each of the 11 GSL schools were recognized.

The NECA/IBEW 2007 Spring GSL athletes: Tyler Murphey, Central Valley, track; Mickenzie Alden, Central Valley, softball; Tanner Hamilton, East Valley, baseball; Eleaya Schuerch, East Valley, track; Kelsey McLauchlin, Ferris, tennis; Andre Jennings, Ferris, track; Matt Wakeley, Gonzaga Prep, soccer; Andrea Driscoll, Gonzaga Prep, tennis; Brian Richardson, Lewis and Clark, soccer; Maria Mackin, Lewis and Clark, softball.

Also: Nikki Codd, Mead, track; Pat Kanaley, Mead, soccer; Jordan Roskelley, Mt. Spokane, track; Jason Wuerch, Mt. Baseball

Former Lewiston High and Walla Walla Community College pitcher Nick Masters signed a letter of intent to play for Lewis-Clark State College next season.

College scene

Gonzaga junior women’s rower Kelly Steinhaus has been named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Pocock All-America second team as announced by the CRCA early last week.

“Eastern Washington track and field star senior David Paul was given the Coaches Award and was named the team’s most inspirational athlete at the EWU banquet on May 30.

Senior Curtis Suver and sophomore Chad Butorac were named men’s track most improved.

“Washington State’s McKinnon Hanson, Sara Trane and Ryan Scott and Whitworth’s Ben Spaun have been named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII Men’s Track and Field/Cross Country division team.

“Washington State women’s rower Carey Homan (Deer Park) was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic first team for the third straight year after earning a 3.81 grade-point average.

Amy Eneroth (Mead) received honorable mention on the Pac-10 All-Academic team for golf. “Three area athletes at Washington State were named to the Pac-10 Men’s and Women’s Track and Field All-Academic teams. Drew Ulrick (Mead) was a second-team selection while John Cassleman (Pullman) and Jon Jeffreys (West Valley) earned honorable mention.

Men’s golf

David Nuhn (Moscow High School), who spent one season at Lewis-Clark State College, will join the Idaho men’s golf team in the fall. Freshmen Jaime Neill (Bainbridge HS), Danny Newton (Tahoma HS) and Greg Auer (Santa Cruz HS) will also join the Vandals.

Women’s golf

The CC Spokane women’s golf team has announced the addition of six athletes that will join the team next season.

The list includes Devon Plopper (Mead), Kelsey Harting (Chewelah, Katie Sorenson (Central Valley), Cara Hayman (Wallace), Chelsea Kenner (Post Falls) and Ky Lee Schmunk (Lind-Ritzville).

Miscellany

The Northwest Conference Presidents’ Council has appointed Matt Newman as its first full-time commissioner in the league’s 81-year history. Newman will begin his duties July 1.

“Eastern Washington women’s soccer coach George Hageage was one of eight selected to take part in the Master Coach Diploma program by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The one-year program will begin July 9 at Bloomsburg (Pa.) Academy.
