Teen killed in rollover crash

Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

Alcohol was a factor in a crash that killed a 15-year-old boy Saturday and injured seven other teens in the same vehicle, according to Spokane police.

The teens were headed west on East Rutter Avenue, just past North Fancher Way at about 5:15 a.m., when the 17-year-old driver lost control of the 1988 Toyota 4Runner.

The vehicle rolled and the occupants, ranging from 15 to 17 years old, were seriously injured. None of the teens was wearing seat belts.

No names were released by police.

The victim died Saturday afternoon at a local hospital, according to police.

Another teen was upgraded from critical to serious condition after she suffered multiple injuries including fractures to the skull, face and back as well as internal injuries.

The driver was booked into Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center on two counts of vehicular assault. Those charges may be amended later depending on the results of the investigation.

The scene of Saturday’s crash, which is near Felts Field, was roughly the same area where another accident involving three teens took place in April.

That crash led to the death of a 14-year-old boy. He and another girl were in a Subaru station wagon driven by a 15-year-old girl when they crashed into a large piece of earth-moving machinery. The teens were trying to elude police after shoplifting a box of doughnut holes.
