Furrer shoots way to Pan Am Games

Amanda Furrer of Spokane continued her success last week at the Munich World Cup in Germany.

After placing 12th overall in the women’s small-bore rifle 3-position event, the Mead sophomore tied the U.S. J2 National Record after shooting a 399 out of 400 in the air rifle competition. Furrer’s score was tops amongst all other U.S. competitors.

Also last week, Furrer, 16, was selected by USA Shooting to represent the United States at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil July 13-28. The 26-member team is composed of youth shooters from across the country.

Badminton

Four Spokane youth will be among 15 kids representing the state of Washington at the 2007 Jr. National Tournament July 3-8 in Anaheim, Calif. The four were selected based on their results at the Washington State Junior Badminton Championships April 28-29 in Seattle.

The Spokane youth headed to nationals include Alex Zhu (U-11), Nicholas Lee (U-17), Matt Kestell (U-22) and Kris Davis (U-22).

Baseball

Jacob Olsufka hit a triple and a home run and drove in four runs, leading University to a 10-4 Junior America Legion victory over Mt. Spokane last Thursday.

•Rogers’ Jacob Campbell hit a grand slam and drove in five runs altogether in the Pirates 15-11 win over Lakeside in a Junior American Legion game last Wednesday.

Golf

Sierra Bezdicek of Colbert took first place in the girls 13-15 age group after shooting a two-round total of 164 at the 2007 Pacific Northwest Westfield Junior PGA Championship June 3 at McCormick Woods Golf Course in Port Orchard, Washington. Spokane’s Megan Haase took third with a 173.

In the 16-18 age group, Colbert’s Savanna Bezdicek placed 12th with a two-round total of 167.

Also, Spokane’s Erick Henderson shot a 156 to finish 25th in the boys 16-18 age group and Stephen Thoen’s 177 was good enough for 16th in the boys 13-15 age group.

Volleyball

The Jaguar U-14 girls club from Spokane is preparing for its trip to Minneapolis, where it will take part in the National Junior Olympics June 28-July 3.

The team qualified for nationals after winning all nine of their games at the Eastern Regional tournament in Spokane in April.

At nationals, the team will play consecutively for four days, playing anywhere from 6-9 games a day.
