Commission visits Dalton Gardens

The Spokesman-Review

The Kootenai Board of County Commissioners will hold a town hall meeting Thursday in Dalton Gardens. The commissioners want to visit every area of the county to give residents a chance to talk with the elected officials.

There is no agenda for the 6 p.m. forum at Dalton Gardens City Hall, 6360 N. Fourth St.

It will be the third stop for the commission, which visited Spirit Lake in February and Harrison in April.

The gatherings are modeled after get-togethers hosted by state legislators who return from Boise and want to tell residents what’s happening in the Capitol.

For more information, call the commission office, (208) 446-1600.

Teens complete police camp

Four North Idaho teens graduated last week from a law enforcement training camp at the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy in Meridian.

Trent Petersen, of Bonners Ferry, Travis Hixson, of Coeur d’Alene, and Kaile Boward and Jennifer Pearson, both of Clark Fork, were among 33 students selected for the weeklong camp, according to Idaho POST.

The students awoke at 6 a.m. each day for an hour of physical fitness. They studied things such as water rescue, making arrests, working with police dogs and conducting traffic stops.

Nonprofit organizations and law enforcement agencies throughout the state provided scholarships for 25 of the students who participated.

Friday’s graduation ceremony included a speech by Idaho State Police Trooper Chris Glenn, who was shot and injured in the line of duty in December.

Search continues for Rainier hiker

Ground searchers and bloodhound teams, assisted by a helicopter, searched unsuccessfully Monday for a Minnesota man overdue on a hike at Mount Rainier National Park, a park spokesman said.

Searchers planned to resume their air and ground hunt for Jeff Graves, 47, of Minneapolis, early today. Graves was last seen late Saturday morning on Eagle Peak trail, a rugged 3.6-mile route in the southwest corner of the park, spokesman Kevin Bacher said.

His wife and 7-year-old son, as well as his mother and other family members, were at the park, Jacquot said.

“He had good experience in the backcountry,” Bacher said. “We’re just hoping he’s up there waiting for us to find him.”

Child expected to be released

A driver who allegedly fled from Spokane Police and crashed in Hillyard was in critical condition Monday while her 2-year-old passenger was expected to be released from a hospital.

Police say 24-year-old Janean R. Swan fractured both legs and suffered facial, head and internal injuries.

Police say officers pulled over Swan about 9:20 p.m. Sunday after spotting smoke billowing from her station wagon.

During the stop, officers learned Swan had a felony warrant for malicious mischief, Cpl. Tom Lee said. She sped away as they approached to make the arrest, Lee said.

Officers gave up a chase when the station wagon, its hood raised, reached speeds estimated at more than 80 mph. Swan crashed into a truck about 9:40 p.m.

Investigators on Monday were still trying to determine if Swan had the boy on her lap, as initial reports indicated, said Officer Jennifer DeRuwe.

Police have not disclosed the relationship between Swan and the boy. Birth records show she gave birth to a son who would now be 2.
