Search to resume for missing hiker

The Spokesman-Review

Ground searchers and bloodhound teams, assisted by a helicopter, searched unsuccessfully Monday for a Minnesota man overdue from a hike at Mount Rainier National Park, a park spokesman said.

Searchers planned to resume their air and ground hunt for Jeff Graves, 47, of Minneapolis, early today. Graves was last seen late Saturday morning on the Eagle Peak trail, a rugged 3.6-mile route in the southwest corner of the park, spokesman Kevin Bacher said.

About 50 ground searchers, including two teams with bloodhounds, searched Monday, Bacher said. A helicopter also flew the area around 6,000-foot Eagle Peak.

Graves was an experienced hiker and dressed in warm clothing, but he did not carry a sleeping bag or tent, Bacher said.

Graves was hiking alone. He reportedly had planned to return by Saturday evening.

OREGON CITY, Ore.

Deputy shoots man in ‘suicide by cop’

A sheriff’s deputy in Clackamas County shot and killed a 24-year-old man who came at her with two knives early Monday, authorities said.

The man was identified as Luke Seal. State deputy medical examiner Dr. Larry Lewman said his preliminary conclusion is that Seal’s death was a “suicide by cop.”

The deputy had gone to a strip mall in response to a 911 call about a suspicious man, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Detective Jim Strovink, a sheriff’s spokesman, said Seal advanced on the deputy and ignored orders to stop.

“She didn’t have time to react other than with lethal force,” Strovink said. “She took the appropriate trained action. She thwarted the attack.”

The deputy, a 19-year veteran whose name has not been released, shot Seal multiple times in the chest, Strovink said.

Seal died at OHSU Hospital. The deputy was not injured and was placed on paid leave. The Clackamas County Sheriff Office’s Major Crimes Unit and the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the shooting.

Train kills teen crossing tracks

A Union Pacific train struck and killed a teenager in southeast Portland, the Portland Police Bureau said.

Chris King, 17, and another teenager were crossing tracks at a train yard when the southbound train approached on its way to Albany. A witness told police that King appeared to have his attention on another train moving through the area and did not hear or see the one that struck him.

Police officers arrived on scene about 5 p.m. Monday, followed by investigators from Union Pacific.

Driver texting prior to crash, girl says

A teen driver was using a cell phone to send electronic text messages when she lost control of her vehicle, a passenger said.

One passenger, 15-year-old Karly Robins, of Lewiston, remains in a Lewiston hospital in serious condition; her spleen ruptured when she was thrown through the windshield in the June 10 accident.

The other passenger, Christine Wilkinson, 18, received a concussion.

Wilkinson said 18-year-old driver Danilla Tobias, of Pomeroy, Wash., was simultaneously driving and attempting to send a text message when the accident occurred.

“Danilla was texting, and she was looking down like this and she told me to grab the wheel after yelling at Karly for smoking a cigarette,” Wilkinson said. “She told me to grab the wheel, so I did, and right where we were turning she was still texting.”

When Tobias tried to take the wheel again, she overcorrected the vehicle, causing the crash, Wilkinson said.

Lt. Allen Oswald, of the Idaho State Police, said his agency is still investigating.
