Former Lewis and Clark basketball star Katelan Redmon will play at the University of Washington after all.

The Seattle Times reported the decision, which her uncle, LC coach Jim Redmon, confirmed.

“They just decided enough was enough and she elected to honor her letter of intent,” Jim Redmon said. “She’s supposed to start class in a couple of weeks. So much had been written about it and she just wants to move on.”

Katelan had originally signed with the Huskies, but when June Daugherty was fired as coach – and later hired at Washington State – the family asked to be let out of the letter of intent. Washington athletic director Todd Turner denied the request and the Redmons appealed. The Times reported that the appeal was also denied.

“They had to take a whole other step than the appeal,” Jim Redmon said. “It’s over and everyone wants to move forward.”

The family did not return calls to The Spokesman-Review. But in a telephone interview, UW coach Tia Jackson said that from the time she got the coaching job until last week, she spent time winning over Katelan.

“It was very important that I get familiar with each and every one of them (the UW players),” Jackson said. “A few took more patience and time and she fell under that umbrella.”

Jackson has seen Redmon play and said she can definitely be an impact player. She added that unless someone is injured, she doesn’t expect any of the Huskies to redshirt.

“The team has a great upside and everyone can reinvent who they want to be,” Jackson said. “Katelan is one who I feel will go as far as she allows us to take her.”

Redmon played on two LC state championship teams after transferring from Mt. Spokane, playing her best in the biggest games. She wound up her four-year career as the fifth-leading scorer in Greater Spokane League history with 1,243 points.
