Find pet from shelter, group

Thanks so much for printing “The day Lady Luck found Holly” (Jeannie Greene’s citizen journal, June 14). It brought back a flood of memories of all the wonderful shelter dogs I have been fortunate enough to share my life with, and I made copies to send to friends and family far off who will be equally touched.

It is hard to resist the adorable puppies in the pet shop window, but unless the pet shop has a special program to adopt out shelter or rescue animals, pet shops get their puppies from puppy mills. They may say they come from reputable breeders, but the majority come from unregulated states like Idaho and Missouri.

When we buy puppies from pet shops we are unknowingly supporting the puppy mill system. Unfortunately, many pet lovers are unaware of the suffering involved in the puppy mill industry and the true price of that doggy in the pet shop window.

The local shelters and rescue groups are overflowing with dogs and cats desperately needing a home. Resist that adorable puppy in the pet shop window and rescue your special critter from a shelter or rescue group.
